- designing sales pages
- setting up merchant accounts
- coding a shopping cart system

I know I sure don't!

This is why Work At Home United is the

Want To Make Lots Of Money? Look To The Stars!

This past week I had the honor of speaking at the Women's Business conference put on by the Junior League of Oakland-East Bay. So far this has been the highlight of my year. I haven't attended a conference in several months and I kept wondering to myself during the event..."Why don't I do this more often?"
The keynote speaker at this event was Maya Angelou, the most thought-provoking, emotionally stirring, motivating person I have ever heard...let's just say this woman changed my life in the few minutes she spoke. If you ever get the chance to hear her, and want to better your life -- go hear her sing, talk and tell stories. You will become a better person because of it.
Not only did I hear Dr. Angelou speak, but I was able to rub shoulders with other experts in the field of business. The tables were set up in such a way that all the speakers sat together. While there, I made one tiny observation that I think could make you more money. It's not a big deal and I almost didn't even bother to bring it to the attention of my husband as we were making our 5 hour trek back home with a 4 and 5 year old in the back seat asking every few minutes..."Are We Home Yet?" However, I had a few seconds between those overused words and this is what I said. When I actually told him this simple observation, the more monumental it became to me.
As I listened to the keynote speakers, I looked around and noticed that just about all of the speakers who were going to be presenting at the breakout sessions -- the ones who are considered experts in their fields, authors, and people you just look up to -- were all doing one thing...taking notes. They all had their journals/tablets out and they were taking notes of what was said. Then I looked at the other tables, those who were attending to glean as much as they could from the conference -- those who had actually paid over $100 to get in -- no notes were taken! I didn't see any pens or journals.
Experts/Authors/Public speakers are who they are because they work hard in their particular field. They've picked an area they LOVE, a career that is enjoyable to them. Can you say the same? Not only have they decided to follow their passions, but they have realized they can never stop learning. There are other people out there who they can still learn from, tips they can use to make their life that much more fuller and rich.
Since this simple observation a few days ago, I've learned that other very successful business men and women keep journals. Journals they use to write anything and everything in. Whether it be phone numbers, a special quote, or a simple note that your client's anniversary is May 13th....
Write it down...sure, you think you're going to remember it -- but you won't. (Trust me, you won't!) Do you really want to make more money? Look to the Stars!

Work-at-Home Scams - Don't Become a Victim

Work-at-Home Scams - Don't Become a Victim

It's important to properly researcher companies when trying to navigate away from job postings that are scams.

Woman looking stressed out.

The ads are so tempting, and just think -- what if you could make hundreds of dollars a day working from home? Unfortunately, people are losing money every day to work at home scams. Don't become a victim. Here are some ways to make sure you don't become scammed! You know you're just about to get scammed by a work-at-home ad when...
  • The very first line states you can make hundreds of dollars a week working from home.
  • There is no experience needed.
  • You can work just a few hours a week and still make a bundle of money.
  • There is lots of CAPITALIZATION AND !!!!!! used in the ad.
  • You read an extremely vague ad. You haven't a clue what the business is about; but boy, could you be making the bucks.
  • You're asked to call a 900# for more information.
  • For a fee, a company will send you a list of businesses that are looking for home workers.
  • You are forced to make a decision immediately and are made to feel stupid if you say no to their offer.
How to Check A Company Out
Whether you have those funny feelings about the claims of a company or not, do some background research on them.
  • Hire a lawyer. This may seem like a waste of money, but in the long run it could really save you some financial heartache.
  • Call the Better Business Bureau (in the state the company resides in) to see if there have been any complaints against the company.
  • Ask the company if you can talk to any of their happy customers. Please be aware that companies can and will give you false customers to talk to. If these people sound way too happy, I would be a little leery.
Questions You Should Ask If You Are Thinking About Buying A Business Opportunity
Find out from your sponsor, in writing, what is involved with this business; such as: Are you able to return merchandise if it doesn't sell? Is there a money back guarantee? How long have they been in business for? (if it's under a year, I would again be very leery). What is your total cost of this business opportunity, including fees, supplies, and equipment? Will you be paid on salary or commission and how often and who will pay you? Ask the program sponsor to write down every step of the business.
What To Do If You Become The Victim Of A Scam
First you need to write the company that you feel has ripped you off telling them you would like your money back. If they don't agree with you, then you need to let them know you plan to notify officials. The following people should be notified:
  • If you read about this work-at-home scheme in a magazine, let the editor know you've been ripped off by these people and you're not happy about it.
  • The Attorney General's Office in your state or in the state where the company is located.
  • National Fraud Information Center. Call them if you feel you are a victim of a "get-rich-quick" or an "easy money" scheme. Check out their web site for daily alerts or new scams. 1-800-876-7060
  • Your local Consumer Protection Offices.
  • Your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) and the BBB in the state of the scammer.
  • Postmaster. Notify if you received the information through the mail.
  • The Federal Trade Commission. While the FTC cannot resolve individual disputes, the agency can take action if there is evidence of a pattern of deceptive or unfair practices. To register a complaint, write to: Correspondence Branch, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC 20580.

Working Around Children: Management Tips for HomeBiz Moms

Altering your perception of distractions and interruptions can make working at home easier.

Mom overwhelmed in kitchen as kid watches.

by Barbara Brabec
Many moms have told me that the trick in successfully working at home with kids underfoot lies in being flexible. "I won't postpone my creative instincts until my children are adults," says one mother. "I've simply changed my perception of work, altered my view of distractions and interruptions, and adjusted my work schedule to accommodate the needs of my children. This means, of course, that clients must be chosen carefully. We think about the kinds of jobs we can handle and those we can't." Here are some practical tips shared by Moms in my home-business network:
  • If your children could ruin the business illusion you are trying to create, a separate business phone should be considered. And don't let children answer your business line until they're educated in the proper way to do it. The last thing you want is a child yelling into the ear of a prospective client, "It's for you, Mommy!"
  • Develop a series of hand signals you can use to communicate with young children when you're on the telephone with a client. One Mom told me that her girls grew up knowing that a ringing telephone meant that the TV or stereo or most recent fight over a toy or article of clothing went off immediately, and they learned hand signals early on. One signal indicated business (when they were expected to disappear into another part of the house); another indicated they could play nearby quietly.
  • To get extra uninterrupted time for your work, hire a baby-sitter or mother's helper for a certain period each week. Except for emergencies, give the sitter the authority to handle whatever comes up. If your child will be at home under someone else's care during your uninterrupted time, choose for your workspace an area of the house where you aren't in sight. At the appointed hour, close the door and try not to listen. (This gets easier with practice.)
  • To ease stress, take a nap. The smartest thing she ever did, says one Mom, was to start making the whole family take a nap every day. "Every afternoon we turn off all the phones and whoever is home has to lie down and at least rest so Mom can nap," she says. "This is a real mind-rester for me, and it gives the kids some relaxation time, too."
  • Lighten your load by making your children responsible for their own laundry duties. Years ago when her children were very young, a mother of five accomplished this by giving each child a personal basket for carrying dirty linens to the laundry room and carrying them back when removed from the dryer. She put shoeboxes into drawers for her youngest children to hold their unfolded underwear and encouraged them to make a game of matching socks. Today, this home-business mom says she folds no laundry except for her husband's T-shirts and their bathroom towels, and irons only a few special shirts and dresses.
  • Consider giving your son or daughter a tiny corner of your office or workroom so they can "play with mother" all day long. One mother told me she gave her daughter her own little desk, toy typewriter, an old, defunct telephone, and lots of blank paper, pens, pencils, crayons, paints and colored markers. "Because she was free to touch and play with everything she could reach--except the papers on my desk--she learned to respect this at a very young age," she says. "By the time she was four, she was extremely bright and artistic, confident, and secure, owing greatly, I feel, to the fact that I was always with her during her formative years."
  • If you need to see clients on a regular basis with no children around, consider using an incubator facility. I'll never forget the mother I met at a home business conference who explained how she handled client meetings. At that time she was renting an office in an incubator facility one hour at a time as needed. And she had this interesting little box that contained a couple of pictures for the wall, a calendar, and desk accessories--all those little office touches a client would expect to see. She set everything in place just before the client walked in the door and, at the end of her meeting, she packed her little box and went home. Her phone setup was also amusing. In order to legally advertise her phone number, she had all her calls forwarded through the incubator facility. The only problem was, after fifteen minutes there was an automatic disconnect--which meant that every time her phone rang, she had to start a fifteen-minute timer, and if a call happened to run long, she had to get inventive and come up with a good reason to hang up so she could call back.
  • Set time aside for children's activities so they don't become resentful of the homebased business. To avoid missing anything important, keep a calendar for each child showing all ball games, practices, meetings and other appointments so the whole family has a clear view of what's happening each day.
  • As your children grow along with your business, try to get them involved in it by giving them certain responsibilities and paying them accordingly. In addition to the tax advantages of hiring your children, this will give them a greater respect for what you're doing, and may even spark entrepreneurial efforts of their own. Don't take advantage of a good thing, however. Sue, the owner of a sewing business, once told me about her youngest child, Jason, then five, who had been brought into the business as a "runner." Her business was spread all over the house, on different levels from the garage to the attic, and Jason's job was to carry work in progress from one location to another or "gofer" things other family members needed as they worked. One day when I was speaking to Sue, she told me Jason wasn't happy at the moment. On that day, he had literally stomped his foot and said he was tired of doing all this "home business stuff," tired of running all those errands! Hiding her amusement, Sue simply gave her youngest some time off--plus a special reward for being such a big help to the business. For starting your own business today click here

Working from Home with a Toddler

You're about to start your own home business, so you can stay home with your young child. This beats sending your child to daycare every day and having someone else raise him...right?
Harsh reality may set in when you realize building a business takes time and your toddler needs even more time. In fact, it's very unsafe to leave your toddler unsupervised for any period of time. There's choking hazards and so many dangers lurking in your home sweet home.
It's difficult to find a balance, but the important thing to remember is that your toddler is the reason you're staying home. That means, your toddler should take priority. Here are a few tips to get you through the days:
1. Work during nap times, when your toddler has gone to be and before he wakes up. But do make sure you get enough rest for yourself. A tired parent can be just as dangerous as a toddler with no supervision.
2. It's okay to put your child into childcare. If you send your child to daycare or arrange for a playgroup, he will be adequately stimulated and will learn valuable social skills. There are so many benefits to daycare And you will have some uninterrupted time to work on your business.
3. Keep a routine for your toddler. Daily routines are important for your little one. Work regular hours and take regular hours off.
4. Involve your toddler in your business. Talk to him about what you're working on. Ask for his help when putting packages together, cleaning up your desk or surfing the Internet.
5. Set up a little desk of his own. Stock it with papers, crayons and other office toys.
6. Outsource your work when you have too much. You can hire someone to help you with the tasks you can't seem to get to, leaving you extra time to work on the aspects of your business you enjoy and time for your toddler.
Remember, these are important developmental years for your child. You don't want to miss them by having your toddler in full time daycare. Why would you miss them being locked up in your home office?

Working at Home With Kids

Working at home can be difficult for your children to understand. We discuss the best way to approach it.

A dad with his son.

It was a Saturday afternoon, and I had work on my mind.
It didn't matter that it was a beautiful day or that I was currently "in charge" of my two kids-I had work to do. And as a male, I was asserting my right to employ tunnel vision and to forget everything around me so that I might finish this project.
"Dad, will you come and play with us?" my daughter asked. "Not now, honey," I told her. A short while later, my son tried. "Dad, are you done yet?" "No, please let me finish this," I said in a tone much sharper than I'd intended.
After a few more minutes of focused work, I heard my kids fighting in the other room. While I usually let them work out their own fights, this one sounded like it needed intervention. I broke things up and before long, I found myself in a wrestling match with both of them.
Their plan had worked! While they may not have consciously planned it, I was now firmly planted in their world. My tunnel vision had been shifted to a different focus: who would win the wrestling match. And I must admit that this was a whole lot more fun than the project I was working on.
Although I had been frustrated with my kids, it wasn't their fault. I had failed to make proper boundaries with them. I hadn't made it clear to them that I'd need a certain amount of time and space while I worked. And I hadn't told them what I expected of them.
As fathers and mothers increase their workload in this country, work and home obligations often come into conflict. We must often make the agonizing choice between spending "quality time" with our kids versus getting caught up with work. An excerpt from Robert Bly's book, "The Sibling Society" (1996) tells of the problems that fathers have in finding the time to have more "complete"lives:
"The patriarchal system's destruction of fatherhood continues in the United States today: In 1935, the average workingman had forty hours a week free, including Saturday and Sunday. By 1990, it was down to seventeen hours. The twenty-three lost hours of free time a week since 1935 are the
very hours in which the father could be a nurturing father, and find some center in himself, and the very hours in which the mother could feel she actually has a husband."
I wish that I could have more free time with my kids. I also wish that I could spend more time with my wife.
And I know in the future I'll be faced with the choice between work time or family time on many occasions. There's a lot of guilt on either side of this decision. But ten years from now nobody will care much about the project that I'm working on.
My kids, on the other hand, will grow up and think back on their childhood for the rest of their lives. The memories that we create together are eternal. Someday, these memories will pave the way for them to have memorable experiences with their own children.
The truth is that I still haven't finished that project that I was so focused on, and I can't say that it's too upsetting to me.
And I know my kids are just fine with it.

Rocking Your Network Marketing Sales And Customer Base

Network marketing truly ROCKS! It’s one of the smartest forms of distribution, where it cuts out the middleman, overhead, employees, and a brick and mortar building–and allows us as distributors to leverage strong brands and promote powerful products, and potentially earn a really lucrative income!
Developing a rockin customer base is essential in our profession. It’s a great way to earn upfront money, and of course, residual income as your customers reorder from you. Customers also make the best “evangelists” for the product, often times telling others about their results–and referring people on! And if you take great care of your customers, it’s likely they continue to order from you and will eventually want to join you in the business to get your distributor discount on the product too!
Today I want to share a few ways that I’ve built my customer base:
-Launch events in people’s homes—We aren’t a party plan company, but when I started my business, I hosted some events in my home to share the products and the opportunity. We will talk about the mechanics of how to host a successful event on an upcoming blog post. But I knew if I had limited hours, I would rather spend 1 hour of my time in front of 10 or more people, opposed to talking to one person on the phone for an hour! It was a great way to build my business fast! When I saw the success, I began calling my friends and family saying, “I have a business that’s growing in your area, and I would love to meet new people. Would you be willing to host an event for me? You invite your friends, I will do all the work. I’ll even throw in free product as a thank you”! This expanded my audience, increased my exposure, and helped me to secure more customers and leads for my business.
-Customer appreciation events- once a month my local team and I did Friends, Family, and Customer Appreciation Events. We would do them at a winery and do a “leave the aging to wine and cheese” event or a “cocktails and conversations”.  Some are having them in home. We would focus on sharing product stories, doing product demos, and doing fun drawings. And of course, we mentioned the opportunity and shared our business success stories too!  Our friends, family, and customers would come and bring their friends! These fun events would pack the room for us & give great results!
-Gift it at every occasion- I am always looking for ways to get our products in people’s hands—whether it be the holidays, someone’s birthday, or as a thank you. I know if I can get them on the product, they’re hooked! Plus it’s an open door to a conversation about my business in the future when I follow up with them!
-Tradeshows- when I started my business I looked for every occasion to get in front of a lot of people. I would go online and search for events at schools, churches, local networking events, etc. If the booth was under $100, I was “in”! I would have a raffle to collect leads for my email list, draw them in through the raffle and have quality conversations, and always generated product sales and interested prospects for the business. The key to those events? Follow up!
-Networking Groups- One of my top leaders Amy recently did a rockin class for our team on how to generate big business through networking groups. One of her mentors (a 6 figure earner in our profession) had recommended it. Amy committed to going weekly (they do require commitment and building of relationships)…but today it’s generated a lot of product volume for her, and recently the gals in the group hosted a wine and cheese event for her which produced significant sales!
-Leverage Social Media- If you don’t know how to do social media “well”…I recommend you follow me on my social media sites and “follow the leader”. What I do can easily be modified with your product/opportunity message! So watch, and learn! :)As you, your family and friends are using the products, be sure to develop a lot of product stories and track your progress with before and afters—post the before and afters and their testimonials on social media sites—collect them from your customers too and ask them for permission to use them!
-Develop your own “referral rewards” program- that rewards your customers and contacts for referring people on to you for the products, or the opportunity—or even if they’d be willing to host an event for you to help you to expand your audience.
I’d be sure to tell your customers and contacts that you’re always looking for referrals for the business, and for people who’d like to join the on the products…and then tell them what you’re willing to offer for their referrals, whether it be a small product that you can fulfill through your personal order, or whether it be cash back from your commission as a “finders fee”.
And then let them know you’re expanding in their area, and would love to get to know more people. Say something like: “I’m expanding my business in your area and would love to meet more people! Would you be willing to host an event for me? It would just take an hour of your time, you invite people, I’ll do the work, and I’m happy to throw in some of your favorite products as a thank you.” If they host that event, when people are signing up, another trick is to ask them: “Are these folks coming in under you or under me? Now’s your chance to join me”! My business partner Karen did this and developed a whole new leg in her organization!

Sarah and Emily– Proof That Referrals are Rewarding!
Use your discretion on how much you’re willing to give for referrals who join  you on the products or the business, or if someone hosts an event for you—but don’t forget, referrals can be very rewarding! Some of my strongest consultants came from referral sources! In fact, my personal business partners Emily & Tim are both top leaders in our company. I met Emily through my sister Emily. My sister wasn’t interested in our business, but I asked her if I could share more with her about what I was doing, in hopes that she could lead me to someone. I further explained there would be referral rewards for  her if she did! She agreed, I shared more, and I gave her some ideas of what to email out and a few brief blurbs to post on FB. One day, she posted a few sentences on FB about my business and my success, asking people if they wanted to learn more. A gal at our gym messaged her back, came to one of our meetings, and joined me! Today, she’s risen to the top of our leader board, has earned over $10,000 in bonuses with the company on top of her commissions, and also served on our company’s advisory board! The best part? Emily and Tim have become two of our best friends!
As you can see, referrals can be very rewarding! So get out there and share your rockin referral rewards with everyone!

Asthma/Eczema Testimonials

Chemicals in YOUR home causing problems / illnesses... like eczema and asthma!!
There are so many chemicals and cancer causing agents in the daily products most people use.  Not only are they hurting you and your family when you use them... but, they are also out-gassing as they sit under your cabinet!!
Here are some testimonials I would like to share about how switching their homes to melaleuca changed and enhanced some lives:

Asthma Tips/Testimonials:
My husband has Asthma and prior to shopping with Melaleuca I was not able to clean the home if he was present.  This was a huge problem when I became a full-time stay at home mom, especially since he was working a night shift.  I could not clean any part of the home while he was sleeping because the bleach and ammonia fumes would literally wake him up with an asthma attack.  I could not even run the dishwasher until he was gone.  As long as I cleaned in the evenings after he left for work, he was fine.  I wasn't!  I was exhausted at this time of day.  Needless to say, not much cleaning got done!  Now though we are in a completely different place.  Mick picks up any of our cleaners and cleans with me without any cause for concern.  On top of this, we have saved a ton of money.  We no longer buy inhalers every month.  This was costing us $50/month (copay).  Now, we might buy this 1-2 times/year.  Over the last 9 + years this has saved us over $5000 in medication, not to mention doctor expenses.  My husband frequently comments how his home is no longer his enemy!  When we visit the homes of others who still use bleach, he can't even stay in their home.  His eyes immediately water up and he gets a tight chest.  But HIS HOME IS SAFE!

Eczema Tips/ testimonials:
Cleaning products! Yes, cleaning products! When you live with someone who has eczema, you eventually figure out all the triggers. My husband works in a Blood Bank and the lab counters are constantly washed down with diluted bleach. If he does not pay attention and allows his skin to come in contact with the surface, he will have an immediate flare up! My niece and nephew have to wear long pants or stockings to day care because the back of their legs will break out in contact dermititis from the Lysol that is sprayed on the chairs. All these cleaning products leave a residue behind and for someone with eczema this can lead to a serious, miserable flare up. All of Melaleuca's cleaning products are free of harsh and harmful chemicals and will not do this.  Your best friends will be Renew Lotion, Melagel, Dermacort and Melapower! ( everything in contact with their skin makes a BIG difference, laundry detergent is always in contact with their skin all day long on their clothes and linens!)
~~~~
I just want to share a story from one of my current customers who came to me over 5 years ago with her then 7 year old who has severe eczema.  About a week after she switched over to Melaleuca's products, she called to thank me stating my son is finally sleeping though the night! He was 7 years old! He would literally scratch all night long! On top of that, she said, he refuses to take a bath unless he sees me add the Renew Bath Oil and he reminds her to bring the Melagel with them when they leave the home. Her husband went to their pediatrician and told him, stop prescribing Ointments and Creams and Start prescribing THIS and gave him a Melaleuca catalog.
The RENEW LOTION is a life-safer and once starting with the Melapower laundry detergent
Love this Testimony on Tub N Tile!!!
How often do you get information from customer who love the products they are using in then home on a everyday basis.  Well this company gets them handed in by the hundreds everyday here is just another awesome customer sharing their experience.
A Testimony for the Tub & Tile Cleaner You Won't Believe!
We have 13 acres of rolling hills and large grandfather pecan and oak trees along 2 weather creeks. We had a really severe storm 3 weeks ago and a large grandfather tree fell into the creek across our property line. The tree is massive at least 100 years old. In it's falling it hit another oak tree damaging it and landed on a grandfather pecan tree putting it under a lot of stress . The other day we met with our neighbor next door that we share the property line with to discuss a plan of cleaning the massive tree out of the creek. First of all I am a mosquito magnet! But anyway I was cleaning my bathroom with the Tub & Tile cleaner which I enjoy so much! Really I look forward to using it the scent is wonderful and I know I'm not breathing anything toxic, when my neighbor text-ed us to meet her at the big tree. She is very cautious about chemical exposure as she is a cancer survivor of 8+ years! I decided to take her a spray bottle of the Tub & Tile Cleaner for her to try. We were there just a few minutes when she started hopping around slapping mosquito's and she looked at me and said why aren't they biting you? I could still smell the Tub & Tile on my arms and told her it must be the Tub & Tile cleaner! Not one mosquito bit me!  She quickly took her bottle of Tub & Tile and began to spray her legs and arms rubbing it all over herself! Not one insect bite afterward and we stayed at the creek talking for 1 1/2 hrs. enjoying the beauty of the massive trees as the sun began to set. Amazing.
Goal:  Build reliable, residual income Remember the 80/20 Rule
This is by far my favorite!
¡        According to the EPA, more than 72,000 synthetic chemicals have been produced in the last 60 years.  Less than 2% of these chemicals have been tested for toxicity, mutagenic, carcinogenic, or birth defects
¡        80% exposure to pesticides happens inside; indoor air quality is 5 times worse than outdoor air quality
¡        FDA regulates food and drugs but VERY LITTLE cleaning, personal care and cosmetics
¡        Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene, toluene, xylene are found in common household cleaners and cosmetics
¡        These chemicals are cancer causing and toxic to the immune system
